Magnetizers Featured at UK Engineering Design Show

Magnetiser Assembly-Magnetizer-Bunting Magentics EuropeThe ability to design bespoke magnetizing fixtures for post-assembly magnetization will be the focus for Bunting Magnetics on stand C22 at the Engineering Design Show on October 17-18, 2018 (Ricoh Arena, Coventry, UK).

Bunting Magnetics is a world leader in the supply of Magnetizers (Chargers) and Fixtures, Bespoke Technical Magnetic Assemblies, and Magnets. The European manufacturing and design headquarters for these magnetizers are based in Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire.

These magnetizers and fixtures are made exclusively by Bunting Magnetics Europe in Berkhamsted and nowhere else in the world.

Permanent magnets and magnetic assemblies are fundamental to the operation of electric motors, wind turbines, computers, and cars. There is a rise in the product design of new technology that relies on high-intensity magnetic forces. However, very strong permanent magnets, such as Neodymium, are difficult and dangerous to handle.

Post-assembly magnetization of permanent magnet assemblies offers many advantages in the design and manufacturing process. There are considerable savings in assembly time due to the difficulties of handling charged magnets. This also improves the safety and health of the workforce by removing the need to handle dangerous magnetized parts. Additionally, it is easier to safely store a magnet assembly if it has not been magnetized.

The ability to model magnets after magnetization during the design phase is an invaluable tool in assessing the feasibility of post-assembly magnetization. Bonded isotropic permanent magnetic rotors and sintered Halbach permanent magnet rotors are both ideal for post-assembly magnetization.

There are a number of key design criteria to consider when magnetizing sintered Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnet rotors. The design process must include consideration for saturating the pole transition regions. The right energy required to saturate the whole rotor is also fundamental to the design. In order to achieve post-assembly magnetization, a compromise in the system design may be needed.

In all projects, the method of magnetization should be considered as early as possible in the design phase.

Bunting Europe’s engineering team, based at the UK headquarters in Berkhamsted, are tasked with designing magnet assemblies that can be magnetized post-assembly. Using onsite magnetizers and modeling, the engineers are able to determine the optimum configuration for a specific application. This UK-based expertise is a unique service in the industry.

Bunting’s engineers will be at stand C22 at the Engineering Design show on October 17-18 to discuss and offer advice on specific magnet applications.

Corrosion Resistant Magnetic Liquid Trap for Improved Performance

New design uses corrosive-resistant coating to avoid pitting and damage caused by acidic foods

MLT-CX6-Bunting Magnetics-Newton, KSNEWTON, KS – Bunting® Magnetics Co., the leader in moving, removing and holding metal, is introducing its newly designed magnetic liquid trap made specifically for the food processing industry. Manufactured from a single piece of corrosive-resistant material, the CR-MLT is used specifically in processing acidic foods, including tomatoes and citrus.

“We developed our corrosion resistant magnetic liquid trap because produce processors needed to replace their liquid traps more frequently,” said Rod Henricks, Director of Sales. “Over time, acidic foods and cleaning solutions cause pitting and other damage to the equipment, which means downtime during peak production time to replace parts.”

Get longer life and improved performance with the Bunting CR Magnetic Liquid Trap

In addition to the corrosive-resistant material, the CR-MLT offers several features that produce processors desire. It has a high-pressure rating, which can handle a higher volume of product faster. Cleaning the CR-MLT couldn’t be easier; as you pull the cartridge, a gasket wipes it clean. Because it is made from a single piece of stainless steel, there are no welds and no crevices to corrode.

Under normal circumstances, 316L stainless steel has good corrosion resistance; however, when under strain and acidic environments, intergranular cracks occur. This compromises the integrity of the protective oxide film, which results in pitting and corrosion. With Bunting’s new super alloy material in the CR-MLT, it has a much higher corrosion resistance than 316L stainless steel. Acidic foods such as tomato paste, ketchup and vinegar-based products, as well as high temperature chloride-based cleaning agents, won’t cause pitting, crevice and stress corrosion.

Bunting is known to develop and use the highest power magnets it can in each of its applications, and the CR-MLT Magnetic Liquid Trap is no exception. The CR-MLT utilizes 45SH magnets – temperature-compensated, high-intensity, neodymium magnets – for superior capture of metal contamination.

No other competitor offers a similar product. “The CR-MLT was developed to answer the call of produce processors who wanted a better, safer, longer-lasting magnetic liquid trap,” said Henricks “Bunting Magnetics solves problems. We knew corrosion and pitting are significant issues in produce, especially tomatoes, and developed this solution.”

Bunting introduces improved magnetic pull test kit with NIST digital scale

Perform pull test verifications on magnetic separators on your own schedule and avoid disrupting production.

Magnetic Pull Test Kit - Digital Scale

NEWTON, KS – Bunting® Magnetics Co., the leader in moving, removing and holding metal, is introducing its newly designed pull test kit. All industries should utilize a pull test on their magnetic separators. But, with the attention on food safety being so high, it is required for food safety and quality in every facility that transports, processes or packages food.

“We believe our pull test kit is the most comprehensive available,” said Rod Henricks, Director of Sales. “The performance and calibration options with the custom-made scale make it superior to any spring scale kit version. The attachments, hardware and user documentation are reliable and easy to use.”

When Bunting considered developing a new kit, improving the accuracy and metrology of the digital scale was the first priority, Henricks said. Bunting makes the kit complete and it includes Bunting branding and menu prompts.

The competitively priced kit also includes a much-improved polarity indicator, which allows you to verify the pole configuration of the separation equipment. Another useful feature of the indicator shows the user how far the magnetic field actually extends beyond the surface of the magnet, which helps determine spacing between cartridges for a given application.

The optional version has a digital scale which comes with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) calibration check certificate. This complies with the metrology requirement of International Organization for Standardization and other quality and safety programs. The scale can be sent in for annual check-up, calibration and NIST certificate renewal.

Bunting continues to offer its standard pull test kit with a standard scale.

The maintenance department should always have one to periodically inspect and test the effectiveness of their magnetic separators. “I would recommend that the quality/safety office also maintain a kit that is the control standard for use by their personnel,” Henricks said.

Bunting Magnetics Co. expands line of its stainless steel separation conveyors

New 12-inch diameter unit recovers more stainless steel than ever in zurik applications

NEWTON, KS – Bunting® Magnetics Co., has expanded its line of Stainless Steel Separation Conveyors for the Auto Shredding Residue (ASR) industry with the 12-inch Stainless Steel Separation Conveyor™ (SSSC®). The company successfully introduced its new SSSC units at ISRI 2017 in New Orleans last spring and recently received a patent for its innovative magnetic design. Not one to rest on its laurels, the company will introduce the second-generation enhancement to the original SSSC design at ISRI 2018.

This innovative machine expands the company’s reach in the ASR industry for the separation of work-hardened stainless steel, as well as the purification of zurik fraction and in wire-chopping applications. Bunting, the leader in moving, removing and holding metal, is the inventor of stainless steel separation. The company continues to deliver game-changing solutions for the recycling industry with its new for larger stainless recovery.

The SSSC is a natural progression from Bunting’s High Intensity Separation Conveyor® (HISC®), which was the first of its kind in the industry and does an outstanding job separating smaller fraction stainless steel. Competitors introduced similar units to HISC, which do a comparable job in the smaller (less than 1.5 inch) stainless steel separation in the past two years.

The original SSSC has been tested in the field for a year, giving Bunting engineers an opportunity to make significant improvements over the original design. “The 12-inch diameter gives a stronger field above the belt and the larger diameter conforms better to the larger irregular shredded stainless steel, which gives it a better chance to hold onto and recover the larger pieces,” said Don Suderman, Product Manager, Material Handling.

“It pushes the extreme high gauss field higher above the belt into the larger irregular pieces of shredded stainless steel metals,” Suderman explained. “The patented circuit arrangement also creates a larger high intensity, collective flux field pattern, which holds on to those pieces far better than anything before this.”

The new SSSC offers even better separation, holding as much as 94 percent of stainless steel. The heart of the system is the magnetic circuit design, which utilizes a revolutionary configuration of high-strength neodymium magnets. It attracts, holds and extracts work-hardened, irregularly shaped stainless steel – up to five inches in size – from the product recycling stream.

The unique, high-intensity circuit design provides maximum holding force and the ability to catch paramagnetic, work-hardened stainless steel at larger sizes that were previously impossible to separate. It truly raises the bar by leveraging new designs and technology and fortifies Bunting’s leading position in the recycling industry.

Recyclers can also attain the purest product possible with the SSSC in several other applications, including insulated copper wire (ICW) purification, during which the machine pulls out stainless steel shielding of chopped wire; cleaning stainless steel contamination from wire and steel wire connectors.

“Even the smallest bits of stainless steel can cause damage to equipment down the product stream and lower the value of recycled product,” explained Suderman. “It’s imperative that we help our customers achieve maximum purity and our family of stainless steel separation conveyors does just that.”

Bunting engineers incorporated several design features to maximize the SSSC’s functionality: a tough, long-lasting urethane belt with 3/16” stainless steel sideguards to seal off and contain the flow; heavy-duty 3/16 inch stainless steel construction with forklift slots for easier installation; custom sizes available up to 78 inches (2 meters) wide and 144 inches (3.65 meters) long to fit any application; and now, two pulley diameters for extreme effectiveness; optional variable frequency drive to optimize separation for belt speeds between 60 and 200fpm; and an optional splitter to separate the stainless steel fraction and non-magnetic material.

FF350 High-Temperature Drawer Filter

Offering the most complete line of drawer magnets in the industry, Bunting will highlight one of its newest innovations, the FF350 High-Temperature Drawer Filter – rated to 350 degrees F. Because the high heat required in today’s molding and extrusion applications can diminish strength and holding power, the FF350 includes upgraded rare earth magnets for stronger hold and longer life. The new design fits the standard FF housing, so existing equipment can be modified to meet changing needs. Upgrades also include a polycarbonate viewing window and higher temperature rated seals and knobs.

Grinder Feeder Conveyor with Metal Detector

Selecting and combining the proper equipment is essential to optimize the purification of product, maximize equipment output and protect it from serious damage and repairs. The Grinder Feeder Conveyor is used for shredding and grinding plastic purgings to scrap bumpers, stringers, carpet, wood pellets, plastic bottles, tires or even glass bottles or wood pallets. The GFC handles 1,000-10,000 pounds per hour and uses 6″ to 10″ pulleys. It’s durable, with formed steel frame construction and offers multiple belt options with standard cleats or cleat-topped belts. By choosing to combine the GFC with optional metal detectors with flip gate reject of contaminant, infeed hoppers, magnetic pulleys or mobile bases, companies can design exactly the equipment it needs to achieve maximum separation and optimize product purity.

HISC® High Intensity Separation Conveyor®

Until Bunting® invented stainless steel separation, it didn’t exist. With superior engineering and magnetic finite element design software technology, the High Intensity Separation Conveyor® (HISC®) attracts, holds and extracts work-hardened 300 stainless steel metals and para-magnetic chips from plastic product stream to achieve product purities once thought impossible. The HISC® incorporates extremely high gauss fields, neodymium rare earth magnets and a field-tested design to achieve maximum stainless steel separation. It attracts, holds and extracts some of the weakest magnetic materials, including razor blades, small computer screws, small stainless sheet metal from computer hard drives, tiny screws in plastic chips and green boards with attached chips. Bunting® built its company and its reputation in the plastics industry by working alongside organizations to solve metal separation challenges.

Bunting® Magnetics Co. awarded patent for innovative magnetic circuit design used in its SSSC Stainless Steel Separation Conveyor

Revolutionary magnetic circuit design captures up to 94% of large fraction stainless steel

NEWTON, KS – Bunting® Magnetics Co., the leader in moving, removing and holding metal, and the inventor of stainless steel separation, has been awarded a U.S. patent for its ground-breaking magnetic circuit design incorporated in the Stainless Steel Separation Conveyor™ (SSSC®). The SSSC® Stainless Steel Separation ConveyorTM, launched at ISRI 2017, has delivered game-changing solutions to the recycling industry ever since. Field tests have proven it removes up to 94% of large fraction stainless steel.

This innovative machine expanded the company’s reach in the Auto Shredding Residue Industry for the separation of work-hardened stainless steel from Zurik streams, the purification of small fraction stainless steel and in ICW wire-chopping purification applications.

“In addition to protecting this technology from being copied by competitors, the U.S. patent shows Bunting Magnetics’ innovation, continual enhancement, design growth, and dedication to solving magnetic separation challenges in the Automotive Recycling Industry,” said Don Suderman, Product Manager, Material Handling and inventor of the magnetic circuit design.

“The SSSC is a natural progression from Bunting’s High Intensity Separation Conveyor (HISC), which was the first of its kind in the industry and does an outstanding job separating smaller fraction stainless steel,” said Suderman.

The heart of the SSSC system is the unique magnetic circuit design, which utilizes a patented configuration of high-strength neodymium magnets. It attracts, holds and extracts work-hardened, irregularly shaped stainless steel – up to a massive five inches in size – from the product recycling stream.

“Because its unique magnetic circuit has a much stronger reach-out field above the belt than competitive products, it is even better for grabbing and holding onto larger irregular shaped pieces of stainless steel,” Suderman explained. “It pushes the extreme high gauss field higher above the belt into the larger irregular pieces of shredded stainless steel metals and also creates a larger high intensity, collective flux field pattern, which holds onto those pieces far better than anything before this.”

“The largest market for these units is in pulling and recovering mid and larger fraction of stainless steel from Zurik streams usually after the Finders. The SSSC’s unique high intensity magnetic circuit gives it the ability to reach out and recover these sizes of work hardened stainless steels from the stream and help purify that fraction to a high enough degree for domestic sales,” Suderman says.

With the SSSC, auto shredders can also attain the purest product possible in several applications, including insulated copper wire (ICW) purification, during which the machine pulls out stainless steel and dirty contamination from the wire before chopping which dulls knives and purifying the chopped wire after chopping for cleaner higher purity copper for domestic sales.

“Even the smallest bits of stainless steel can cause damage to equipment down the product stream and lower the value of recycled product,” explained Suderman. “It’s imperative that we help our customers achieve maximum purity and our family of stainless steel separation conveyors does just that.”

Bunting Magnetics Co. has also applied for international patent protection.

Bunting successfully introduced its new SSSC units at ISRI 2017 in New Orleans last spring. The company will introduce the second-generation enhancement to the original SSSC design at ISRI 2018, held April 16-18 in Las Vegas. Booth #637.

Bunting® Magnetics Co. to introduce high temperature FF drawer magnet – rated to 350 degrees – at NPE 2018

NEWTON, KS – Bunting® Magnetics Co., the leader in moving, removing and holding metal, is introducing a high temperature version of its popular FF Series drawer for the plastics industry. The most important feature of this new unit is its ability to perform at 350-degree temperatures inside the drawer.

Bunting will debut the Hi Temp FF Drawer Magnet – named the FF350 – at NPE 2018 in Orlando, Florida, held May 7-11. Bunting OEM’s and end-user customers will be able to discuss the specifications and have hands-on demos with actual drawers.

Bunting built its business in the plastics industry and constantly strives to innovate its products to keep pace with changes in the industry. “Current equipment manufacturers of the molding machines and dryers are looking to process at higher material temperatures, and the FF 350 Hi Temp Drawer Magnet addresses these new requirements of the industry,” said Brock Herrmann, Product Manager, Magnetic Separation. “High heat can be damaging to rare earth magnets, so it’s important to balance the need to handle higher temperature plastics, but retain the holding value of our magnets.”

The Hi Temp FF drawer is most often installed above the opening of the molding machine and plastic resin passes through the drawer to remove ferrous contaminants. This ensures a cleaner, higher quality product. It also protects the molding machine from damage due to tramp metal.

The Hi Temp FF drawer can be used in any plastic molding or extrusion application. Because the drawer sits at the opening of the molding machine, in applications where the resin needs to be dried and/or pre-heated above 300 degrees at the introduction to the molding machine, the magnets will be subjected to higher temperatures.

In addition to the magnet upgrade, the Lexan viewing window has been replaced with a polycarbonate that will hold up under the higher temperature conditions. “We thought everything through on this redesign, so that even the plastic knobs that latch down the drawer are designed for the higher temperatures,” Herrmann explained.

Extensive research and development is typical for Bunting, and production of the Hi Temp FF Drawer was no exception. “We went further than the actual required temperature rating to make sure this design would be effective in the future,” Herrmann explained. “Other brands of magnetic separators simply won’t retain their magnet strength over time with the higher temps we are seeing in the industry. So far, we aren’t aware of any competing product that can match the temperature rating, along with the pounds holding value of our magnets.”

Because the design of the housing for the Hi Temp FF Drawer Magnet is the same as Bunting’s standard FF, the drawers and accessories can be purchased independently to complement the existing housing. It makes the investment in the upgrade affordable for existing customers.

Bunting has the largest line of drawer magnets, which can be configured to fit any need. The Hi Temp FF Drawer Magnet will be showcased with other offerings at NPE 2018, booth #W-5563.
